Barcelona went down fighting last night, losing a truly thrilling Champions League second leg 4-3 (7-6 on aggregate) at San Siro in what is likely the game of the season.
This determined fighting spirit earned praise from both Jordi Cruyff and Luis Suárez, as the two figures’ comments were highlighted by Voetbal International after the spectacle.
“If my father had been allowed to choose a style of play, he would have chosen this”, Cruyff began after the Movistar football show.
According to him, it was a shame that Barcelona lost, but the manner in which they did enabled them to leave with their pride. “But then with honour. In a way that people enjoy. We went down with our heads held high and were close.”
In yet another momentous fixture between the two clubs, Barcelona remained close competitors until Francesco Acerbi struck in injury time, after which Inter won in extra time.
“The final seemed to be in the bag, and the game seemed to be over. I don’t know how, but it happened the way it did. My father would be proud of the team. Of how the players played and with what intentions they did so.”
Suárez, who played 283 official matches for Barça and won numerous trophies with the club, also enjoyed watching the spectacle, together with his friend and Inter Miami teammate Lionel Messi, he told Spanish journalist Miquel Blázquez.
“Messi watches everything from Barcelona and is very happy with what Flick is doing,” said the Uruguayan, who revealed a nice detail from a conversation with the Argentine a few days ago.
“He told me that he is surprised and proud because the team has found its identity again.”
