The French FA has announced tonight that Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy has been forced to withdraw from the team for the upcoming internationals following a tibia injury.

The former Lyon man – who has missed the majority of 2023 through injury already – will undergo treatment in Qatar after feeling pain in his shin.

In his place, Marseille midfielder Jordan Veretout has been called up. Eduardo Camavinga presumably moves back to the left-back role he had been occupying since the World Cup, having initially been named as a midfielder in last week’s squad.

Veretout has six caps since first appearing in the senior team in 2021, having been part of the Nations League-winning squad as well as the run to the World Cup final in December.

Next week, Didier Deschamps’ men will take on Gibraltar in Faro, Portugal on Friday, June 16. Three days later, they host Greece at the Stade de France, both matches a part of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
