Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey admits Newcastle ‘defended for their lives’ in the 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Saturday.
Shelvey sparked jubilant scenes after curling home a superb 87th minute equaliser, leaving City 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool after just 14 matchdays.
But the 27-year-old believes his earned their point and that performances should follow moving forward.
“We worked our socks off, each one of us put in the 110 per cent,” he told reporters after the game.
“When we had possession, we did well and we defended for our lives. You could see the defenders putting their bodies on the line.
“We do a lot of running during the week, but on the pitch, the only time we have been defeated was when the other teams outworked us.
“That of course can’t happen and if we feel we can run more than the other team, we’ll always have a chance in the game.”
Newcastle return to domestic action against Sheffield United on December 5.
