Mats Hummels has revealed how Jonathan Tah ‘asked for permission’ to use his number five jersey with Germany.

Hummels – alongside Thomas Muller and Jérôme Boateng – were stunned in March after manager Joachim Löw revealed he would not be selecting the Bayern trio anymore.

Tah is seen as the future of German football in defence and called the 30-year-old about taking on the shirt.

“He called me and asked me if it was okay,” Hummels told Sky Sports.

“It was an incredible gesture from him and I’ve told him that several times.”

Die Mannschaft travel to the Netherlands on Sunday for their first Euro 2020 qualifier, after drawing with Serbia in a friendly on Wednesday.
