Jonathan David: 'We played a good game'

LOSC's Canada striker Jonathan David was circumspect after his side were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League 2-1 (4-1 on aggregate) by Chelsea in the return leg of their last 16 tie on Wednesday - but vowed Les Dogues will fight to return to Europe next season.

Two-nil down from the first leg at Stamford Bridge a fortnight ago, LOSC had it all to do at the Stade Pierre Mauroy on Wednesday night, but a powerfully struck penalty from Burak Yilmaz (38', pen.) was cancelled out by a fine strike from Christian Pulisic before Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta (71') sealed the deal. 'Effective and decisive'

A tough ending for an heroic performance from Les Dogues, who had the upper hand pin the first half, and Jonathan David was keen to underline the quality that Jocelyn Gourvennec's side had shown against the reigning UEFA Champions League champions. "We were just missing some small details," said the Canada striker. "We played a great first half, we went ahead 1-0 and then they scored on their only chance of the half. They were very effective and decisive again tonight. That's what makes the difference. It's true that we played a good game but we still lost."

'We dream of playing games like the one tonight'

Nonetheless, things are going well now at LOSC, a run of five consecutive clean sheets in Ligue 1 Uber Eats taking the champions all the way up to sixth place - meaning Les Dogues are most definitely in the fight for a return to the European stage next season.

"Now, we still have Ligue 1 and we are motivated to secure a European finish," continued David, who is just two strikes shy of current Ligue 1 Uber Eats top scorers Kylian Mbappé and Wissam Ben Yedder on the scorers chart. "We dream of playing games like the one tonight, with a full stadium behind us."

LOSC return to the battle for a top-five finish this weekend as they travel to Nantes for their Ligue 1 Uber Eats Round 29 clash on Saturday.
