“I have a squad and the need to use the players given the run of games,” said Bruno Genesio after Lille OSC’s 3-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday. The statement was in response to a question about the absence of key trio Jonathan David, Thomas Meunier and Rémy Cabella – under normal circumstances, all would have been expected to start in such an important match, against the reigning Ligue 1 champions.
However, all three started the encounter on the bench. There is certainly a need to rotate the squad after what has been a busy month, consisting of four European matches. The most recent came against Slavia Prague, in Czechia on Wednesday, as LOSC successfully qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
L’Équipe, however, understands that the decision to drop David, Meunier, and Cabella is not simply attributed to rotation. The publication understands that the trio missed a meal, scheduled for 19:30 on Saturday, and therefore the decision to drop them was a disciplinary matter. Genesio, speaking post-match, did not wish to address the reports. “I don’t want to respond to you,” said the Lille manager.
