Jonathan Clauss’ career at Olympique de Marseille came to a turbulent end. Les Phocéens attempted to force the full-back out of the club in January following public criticism from the club’s hierarchy, questioning his commitment.
Those efforts were in vain, but as the end of the season approached, it became clear that Clauss would move on. His reputation has been enhanced whilst at OM. His move to the Mediterranean club from RC Lens has allowed him to become a regular for France and he travelled with Les Bleus for the recent Euros in Germany, even if he didn’t play.
With just one-year remaining on his deal, Clauss was a cheap option for many clubs, and one that was explored by two Premier League giants. According to L’Équipe, Clauss rejected approaches from Manchester United and Aston Villa, as well as Napoli, in favour of joining OGC Nice.
The France international completed his move to Le Gym last week for a reported €5m fee. Choosing a project where Clauss felt “at ease” was a priority for the France international, who signed a two-year deal with Nice in order to remain in Ligue 1.
