Sunderland’s slump at a vital stage of the campaign is a source of frustration for the squad, goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin admitted.
Coming into April, the Black Cats appeared to be in a very healthy position as they aimed for automatic promotion out of League One.
But they have picked up just six points from the last 15 on offer to all but fall out of the race and must now prepare for the anxiety of the play-offs.
“We thought it was going to be a race just between ourselves, Portsmouth and Barnsley,” McLaughlin confessed, as quoted by the Sunderland Echo.
“But with Luton’s current form, it is frustrating that in the last five or six games, we dropped so many points.
“It is always difficult with the run-ins we’ve had, the international break, the cup final, it has been such a packed time.
“The lads have given everything though and you can’t dwell on what might have been. There’s still a lot to play for.”
The Wearsiders are set to be joined in the play-offs by Portsmouth, Charlton and Doncaster.
