Joleon Lescott is expecting big things from Romelu Lukaku this year following his return to Chelsea last month.

What has Lescott said about Lukaku re-joining Chelsea?

Talking to GIVEMESPORT, Lescott revealed how he feels that the 28-year-old is the ideal fit for Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea. The former Manchester City defender also added that the Blues' extra quality when compared with Inter Milan, Lukaku's former club, could present the Belgian international with the chance to show that he is one of Europe's elite strikers in the Champions League this season.

“I think every player that’s played against Lukaku will know how good he is. Yes, it wasn’t the same for him at Inter, but Inter wasn’t the same as Chelsea. This Chelsea team’s a lot stronger, the manager obviously is a winner in this competition, Chelsea have the experience of that, and I just think, fit for a team, I’m struggling to find someone that’s style of play, attributes, fit a team and a style of play more than Lukaku’s does Chelsea.”

How has Lukaku fared in the Champions League previously?

On a personal level, Lukaku has an impressive record in the Champions League. Across 27 appearances in the competition, he has scored 13 goals during his spells at Manchester United and Inter.

However, he has not made it beyond the quarter-finals with any of his teams yet. Indeed, Inter were unable to get past the group stages in both of the campaigns that Lukaku was there, suffering the humiliation of finishing bottom last term in a group containing Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Can Lukaku help Chelsea defend their crown this season?

Lescott's words seem to have some weight behind them given how well Lukaku has started his second spell at Stamford Bridge. The 6 foot 3 attacker delivered a devastating display on his return to the Premier League last month, scoring Chelsea's opening goal in a 2-0 win against Arsenal.

Tuchel's side lacked a prolific goalscorer in 2020/21, with Jorginho finishing as the team's top goalscorer in the league with seven goals, all of which were penalties.

Did Timo Werner score on his Premier League debut for Chelsea?

Yes No

By bringing in Lukaku, they seem to have found the focal point to their attack which has been missing over the last 12 months. Even with their limitations up top, Chelsea still managed to win the Champions League back in May, and they appear to have only strengthened since then thanks to Lukaku moving back to west London.

With this in mind, Chelsea look to have an excellent chance of retaining the trophy this season.
