John van ‘t Schip is currently in discussions with Ajax over succeeding Maurice Steijn as head coach. The former Netherlands national team and Ajax winger confirmed the news himself to NOS. It’s likely that Van ‘t Schip would take over at Ajax on an interim basis, but it’s not yet known how long the period would last for.

For the meantime, Hedwiges Maduro has been appointed as interim manager. The former Ajax midfielder was one of Maurice Steijn’s assistants before the decision was made to sack the 49-year-old on Monday. Maduro will oversee this week’s matches against Brighton, in the Europa League and Sunday’s huge fixture with league leaders PSV Eindhoven.

John van ‘t Schip previously played for Ajax for over an eleven year period. The 59-year-old has also worked as a youth and assistant coach for the Amsterdam club. Over the last decade he’s managed Chivas, Melbourne City, PEC Zwolle and the Greece national team. Now, he’s needed for a rescue mission in Amsterdam. Ajax are off to their worst start ever in a league season, having won just one match in their opening seven Eredivisie games. The Dutch giants are currently 17th in the table.
