Desperate to raise funds, basically any Olympique Lyonnais player was available – at a price – at the hours and minutes ticked down in the transfer window. That included highly promising Ghanaian winger Ernest Nuamah (20).

Nuamah had looked close to a move to Everton, a club that Lyon owner John Textor is in talks to purchase, however, Fulham made a late attempt to hijack the deal. But the deal then broke down at the last minute. L’Équipe then detailed the failed move, revealing that Nuamah, tearful throughout the day, had fled his medical as he did not want to leave OL.

His entourage added extra context, telling L’Équipe that the Ghanaian “loved” Lyon. Speaking at a press conference, Textor provided extra details, in part confirming L’Équipe’s reporting of the events.

Textor told reporters that he had been informed that Nuamah had been happy to move to the Premier League. However, as he quickly learned, this was not the case.

“I called him and encouraged him, and during this conversation, he told me he had to go to the toilets. He came back two hours later and ultimately didn’t leave [the club],” said Textor, who added that he was happy that Nuamah remained with Les Gones. Textor revealed that he also apologised to forward for the turn of events.
