John Textor has followed Sheffield Wednesday on Instagram, with rumours of a potential takeover spiralling

Former Crystal Palace owner John Textor has followed the official Sheffield Wednesday club account on Instagram, which has sparked off fresh rumours of a potential takeover at Hillsborough.

Wednesday have been under the ownership of Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri since January 2015, and it would be fair to suggest that his ownership has been less than favourable by supporters of the club, despite plenty of money being pumped in during the early years.

Relations have soured in recent times though, and this summer, the Owls were placed under a three-window transfer embargo, preventing them from signing any players for a fee until January 2027.

Late payments to HMRC, numerous failed payments to staff members and players and rising debts have ensued, with players being allowed to walk away from their contracts for free to find another club.

Reports of Danny Rohl being placed on gardening leave before his contract was mutually terminated were spoken of, with the German showing his desire to leave the club following the end of the season, being linked to both clubs in the UK and abroad.

Rohl has since left Hillsborough, with Wednesday not receiving a compensation fee from any club, instead mutually terminating his deal with the Owls - the club has since appointed his assistant Henrik Pedersen, but a takeover is seemingly needed to make a difference at the South Yorkshire outfit.

As of now, a takeover of Sheffield Wednesday is yet to come to fruition despite plenty of speculation, and Textor himself in recent weeks would not be drawn to speculation that he may be readying a bid.

Given he has now intriguingly followed the club's Instagram account though, Sheffield Wednesday fans have been reacting to the development, with many, understandably, welcoming the American's interest in the club as they look to move on from Chansiri.

Not every Owls fan is fully enthused with Textor potentially being Chansiri's successor at Hillsborough, but there is a desperation for many to see the current custodian out of the club that the American would be favoured in the short-term if he's the only buyer.

The feeling surrounding supporters is that anybody else would be better than the current Chansiri, and with Textor already holding stakes in numerous football clubs, he clearly shows more interest in the sport than the Thai owner. Owls fans will be hoping that good news is not far around the corner.

John Textor's Sheffield Wednesday interest explained

American businessman Textor already has majority stakes in French club Lyon, Brazilian side Botafogo and Belgium club RWDM Brussels.

It would therefore seem confusing to some as to why Textor would hold an interest in Championship club Wednesday, if it wasn't for the fact that very recently he also held a majority stake at Premier League club Crystal Palace.

With Palace and Lyon both qualifying for the Europa League last season, under UEFA's multi-club ownership rules, it forbids two teams with the same ownership group from competing in the same competition.

Textor sold his stake in Palace as the English club awaits the result of their appeal of UEFA's decision, which sent them into the Conference League instead of the UEFA Europa League.

An English-club-shaped hole has therefore appeared in the American's portfolio, and with Wednesday in crisis and available to purchase for the right price, Textor's interest makes sense.

Whether his following of the club is just a misclick or mere coincidence remains to be seen, but that won't stop Wednesday fans hoping that change is not too far around the corner as the 2025/26 Championship season kicks off in less than a week.
