John Stones has compared playing alongside Erling Haaland for Manchester City with playing with Harry Kane for England and insisted he would not swap the England captain for City's star man.

The 28-year-old defender is one of a select group of players to have played alongside both Haaland and Kane, two players who can make a worthy claim for being the best striker in world football.

Haaland has somehow managed to exceed expectations in the Premier League with his goalscoring exploits since joining City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, while Kane is the competition's third-highest scorer of all time behind only Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney.

Speaking to reporters ahead of England's World Cup last 16 clash with Senegal, Stones offered his opinions on both players and rejected criticism levelled at Kane for not scoring at this tournament.

Asked if Kane was as good as Haaland, Stones replied: "Definitely. Erling is so new to our league, and Harry has been playing in it. They are both incredible players, incredible within their own rights. Harry has always been incredible for me, incredible to play with.

"The things [with Kane] that don’t get spoken about - the positioning, the headers from corners that us as defenders appreciate massively, what he brings to the team as a leader and as a person and as a presence, can outweigh sometimes what happens, or the outcome of things. He is a massive team player and I’m sure he’ll get on the scoresheet soon."

Kane has not yet been on the scoresheet for England in Qatar, but currently has more assists than any player at the tournament after setting up three goals in the group stages.
