An understrength Flamengo saw their title hopes go up in smoke with a Rio de Janeiro derby defeat to Fluminense on Saturday.

Scorers: John Kennedy 17′, 61′, Abel Hernández 85′; Renê 71′

Stripped of a number of regular starters, including strikers Gabriel Barbosa and Bruno Henrique, Renato Gaúcho’s side struggled to convert the majority of possession into goals.

Fla right-back Matheuzinho came desperately close to opening the scoring early on when his looping header bounced off the top of the crossbar.

However it was actually Fluminense who took the lead – quite against the run of play – when John Kennedy forced home the rebound after goalkeeper Diego Alves had poorly parried an initial volley from the 19-year-old striker.

Flu then ht their rivals with another sucker punch just after the hour mark when Kennedy directed Luiz Henrique’s low cross to the net to send the Tricolor fans into raptures at the Maracanã.

Renê gave Fla hope with when his sheer persistence saw him flash a shot home from the edge of the penalty area.

That hope was short-lived, however, as Abel Hernández punished some dreadful defending from the Mengão to curl a lovely effort into the top corner.

Defeat leaves Flamengo 10 points behind leaders Atlético Mineiro with just one game in hand, while Fluminense’s first win in four league outings lifts them to eighth in the Brasileirão table.
