Newcastle United will lock horns with Morecambe at the Globe Arena on Wednesday night as they look to earn a positive result which would ensure their place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup. The Magpies made a bright start to this campaign, but their momentum came to a halt last weekend when they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Steve Bruce would want his players to bounce back in this game ahead of their trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday. The Newcastle head coach could set his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation and might be inclined to make a lot of changes to his first-team for this clash away at Lancashire.

Defence

Mark Gillespie will operate in goal for the Magpies after he kept a clean sheet versus Blackburn Rovers in the last round of the EFL Cup. Emil Krafth is expected to partner Ciaran Clark at the centre of the Newcastle backline as they look to keep things tidy at the back when they visit Morecambe in midweek.

DeAndre Yedlin will be a guaranteed starter at right-back while Javier Manquillo fills in on the other side as a makeshift left-back after his impressive showings in that position over the past few months. Bruce will ask both his full-backs to push high up the pitch so that they can provide adequate support to the front players.

Jamaal Lascelles will provide cover for the centre-back positions on the bench as Bruce looks to rest him for the Premier League showdown against Spurs later this weekend.

Midfield

Daniel Barlaser will probably get the nod to play along with Sean Longstaff as they try to dominate possession in midfield and create some promising goal-scoring opportunities in the opposition half. The talented trio of Matt Ritchie, Miguel Almiron and Christian Atsu will operate just ahead of them as part of the Magpies attack. All three of them will carry the major share of the creative workload going forward with Almiron also acting as a secondary striker at times as he will be expected to make some late runs into the opponent’s penalty box.

Attack

Joelinton will lead the charge for the Tyneside giants up top. The Brazilian forward will be eager to get his name on the scoresheet so that he can earn a place back in Steve Bruce’s squad in the coming weeks.

Callum Wilson might be available for selection on the bench as he awaits his opportunity to come on as a second-half substitute if Bruce decides to call upon his services.
