Joel, attending his first ever fans forum admitted that he is aware of the role fans have at the club. The Glazers have come under increased pressure following United’s ill-fated efforts to take part in the European Super League.

“Fans are the lifeblood of Manchester United and I am personally committed to ensuring that they are given an enhanced voice, through the creation of a Fan Advisory Board and a Fan Share Scheme.”

The advisory board will consult with the club’s senior leadership and owners, and will be comprised of representatives from various United fan groups.

United have revealed that they are in direct dialogue with Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) in order to identify a mutually beneficial fan share scheme. This will involve a new class of shares, which will each carry the same voting rights as those owned by the Glazer family.

Perhaps understandably MUST remains cautious. They will perform their own tests on the scheme before giving it their approval. After all, the devil is in the details and it will serve us well to be wary.

For now, Joel speaks a good game. However, how he implements it will make all the difference. Until we see how it pans out, the jury is out on the American owners.

  3. Manchester United star Andreas Pereira could return to Lazio on loan in 2021/22

However, with them holding the majority share, it remains to be seen just how much power these fan representatives will have.

The Americans have given us little reason to trust them in the last 16 years. There is no reason for us to start now unless they show that they can walk the talk.
