Manchester United spent the early days of the summer transfer window addressing their attack and defence, signing both Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro in quick succession.

United remain interested in adding more stars to their first team. Lately, however, Dan Ashworth and the company have seemingly focused on rejuvenating the Red Devils’ youth setup.

19-year-old forward Ethan Ennis and winger Sam Mather, also 19, have both seen their contracts extended at Old Trafford this week.

Now, the club’s hierarchy has made another academy-focused move, having found a new club for Joe Hugill to continue his development.

The 20-year-old striker scored United’s second goal against Rangers with a ferocious finish over the weekend.

Fans were left excited by seeing new assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy have a little chat with the youngster on the touchline after the full-time whistle.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Hugill is set to head out on loan. The Englishman has agreed to join Wigan Athletic for the coming season.

He was due to be part of Erik ten Hag’s pre-season tour squad, but it is being claimed that he has withdrawn in hopes of finalising his imminent move to League One.

Following the arrival of Zirkzee, who is set to challenge Rasmus Hojlund for the starting spot in the middle of the attack, there is going to be little opportunity for academy strikers to get regular minutes during the forthcoming season.

As such, Hugill, who also spent the second half of the last term on loan, would benefit from working on his skill sets elsewhere.

Meanwhile, United are exploring the possibility of adding another striker to their academy. Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Mancunian giants are interested in signing Arsenal’s sensation Chido Obi-Martin.

The 16-year-old, who scored 10 goals against Liverpool in Arsenal under-16s’ 14-3 win in November last year, was omitted from Arsenal’s list of first-year scholars as the London club looks resigned to losing him.
