Xolos star Joaquín Montecinos has opened up about his proposed move to América during the last transfer window, a switch he ultimately turned down.

The 26-year-old Chile international could have joined the Eagles but decided to stay in Tijuana, where he is under contract until the end of the season.

He will return to Chilean side Audax Italiano at the end of his year-long loan spell.

“I had the opportunity to go to América. From there, I learned a little about how great it is. One realises everywhere that almost everyone supports América, it’s impressive. You ask someone and they say ‘I like Xolos but I also like América’.”

Montecinos also expects to see many more América supporters than Xolos fans this weekend, despite the game being held in Tijuana.

“They told me at the club that there will be many yellow shirts, that it will be filled with people from América, that this is very common and that it happens everywhere.

“Everywhere you go, there are people supporting América. Then you realize how big they are and for that reason, you have to make every decision carefully on the pitch, because every move you make can be very expensive.

The two sides will go head-to-head tonight, with both teams tied on 16 points and battling to get into the Repechaje.
