In the history of “hitting the ground running” as a transfer, we’re not sure there’s ever been a better example than Joao Pedro.

He signed for Chelsea on the 2nd of July, played for them just a couple of days later in the Club World Cup Quarter Final, started (and scored twice) in the semis, then started and scored in the final too.

He has since scored in both of our friendlies in the buildup to this Sunday’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace. Talk about a fast start. In an interview with the club’s website, JP explained what he thought had helped him make such an impact.

Joao Pedro in his first Chelsea training at Cobham!

“It has been a very good experience right from the start. I’m very comfortable, I think because I’ve been in England for five years already playing against them, so I know the players,” he explained.

“‘Of course it’s always a difficult moment for a new player to join in the middle of the tournament, but they were very welcoming with me. Reece [James] spoke with me, and Tosin [Adarabioyo], Enzo [Fernandez] texted me the first day I joined.

‘So they helped me a lot, they tried to make me feel less pressure. I think that’s why I had a good experience in America. Everyone said I looked like I’ve been here for a long time already. The beginning was very good, but I need to keep working hard to improve always. I need to work hard, help the team, help the club to achieve our objectives.”

Joao Pedro on his Gittens connection

Joao Pedro also noted that his little bit of bonus preseason while his colleagues were on holiday had helped him bond with fellow new signing Jamie Gittens, who was in a similar situation.

“The good thing was Jamie [Gittens, another summer signing] was there so we spent a lot of time training together. It was very good to train with him from the beginning.”

Let’s hope that helps them build an instant understanding on the pitch.
