Anthony Barry has confirmed his next international role after parting company with Belgium following the 2022 World Cup.

The 36-year-old has been at Chelsea since the beginning of the 2020/21 after joining from Wigan Athletic, and has continued to be part of the backroom team under three managers – Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel and now Graham Potter.

Alongside his role at Chelsea, Barry has opted to venture into the international game. In February 2021, he joined up with the Republic of Ireland setup ahead of the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign, before linking up with Roberto Martinez at Belgium a year later for the tournament in Qatar.

Following Belgium’s group stage exit at the World Cup, Martinez’s contract wasn’t renewed and he left after over six years in the job.

Last month, Martinez was confirmed to have replaced Fernando Santos as Portugal’s new manager.

Barry has now revealed he has followed Martinez by leaving Belgium for Portugal.

Taking to Instagram, the Chelsea assistant wrote: “I would like to announce I have joined the Portuguese National team as assistant coach alongside my role at Chelsea FC.

“I would like to thank the Belgian federation for my time with them and wish them the best of luck in the future.”
