Joao Felix is officially a Chelsea player after completing his loan move from Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea, who currently sit 10th in the Premier League table, have agreed to pay Atletico Madrid a fee of €11 million (£9.7 million), according to BBC Sport.
In a rather unusual move, the 23-year-old has also signed a one-year contract extension with Atletico, tying him down to the Spanish club until June 2027.
“Chelsea is one of the great teams in the world and I hope to help the team reach their objectives, so I am very, very happy to be here and very excited to play at Stamford Bridge,” Felix told Chelsea’s official website.
Chelsea’s under-fire manager Graham Potter said of Felix during a press conference on Wednesday: “He’s a quality player, can make a difference in the final third of the pitch, young but has had good experience. He’s a quality player that gives everyone a lift.”
Asked if Felix can make an immediate impact, per Football.London, Potter added: “He’s been training and had game time, so from a physical perspective he can go in. It’s always a bit of an unknown going from one country to another but how long that takes goes from player to player. I see a confident player and one that can impose himself on the game. He can take the ball, take it in tight spaces, make passes. He is a nice addition and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”
Felix became the fifth most expensive footballer in history when he joined Atletico from Benfica in a deal worth £113 million in 2019.
While Atleti fans have seen glimpses of the Portugal international at his world-class best, it’s fair to assume that more was expected from the skilful forward – especially because of that astronomical price tag.
Shortly after Felix signed for Atletico, he was asked to name his all-time dream XI during a Q&A session.
Bearing in mind that he was only 19 years old at the time, Felix’s XI made people feel very old with his selections.
