Joao Cancelo has shared details regarding his sudden departure from Manchester City to join Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
The Portugal international joined the German champions on loan with an option to buy during the winter transfer window in a move that shocked many people.
Reports surrounding the unexpected switch suggested that the former Juventus man had fallen out with Man City manager Pep Guardiola.
However, Cancelo has denied any rifts with his former boss, insisting he wanted a new challenge as he did not feel wanted after failing to start any of City’s three games before joining Bayern.
“It’s a lie that I had a fight with Guardiola – a complete lie,” Cancelo said (via Mundo Deportivo).
“I didn’t feel important to the team in recent games. I spoke to the coach, and he agreed. I, the coach, and the club decided that I had to leave – that it was the best option for me.
“I like new opportunities, and I have nothing against City. There I took the step to reach the level I wanted to reach.
“I became the player I am today, and I am very grateful to Pep and the club. They gave me and my family everything, and I will never forget it.”
Rumour has it that Spanish and European champions Real Madrid were also interested in Cancelo before he signed for Bayern.
But the 28-year-old claimed he knew nothing of Los Blancos’ interest but was flattered at the idea.
“In football, you never know, and maybe I’ll be back when the season is over,” Cancelo added.
“Madrid’s offer? I don’t know anything, but it’s a pleasure that one of the best clubs in the world is behind me. It means I’m doing things right.”
Cancelo has wasted no time adapting to life in the Bundesliga and has hit the ground running after claiming two assists in his first three games for Die Roten.
He was also in the starting eleven for Bayern’s Champions League round of 16 first leg 1-0 win over Paris Saint Germain last night.
