Joao Cancelo is set to spend the remainder of the 2022/23 season on loan at Bayern Munich.

On Monday morning, the major transfer news first broke and to say it came as a shock would be something of an understatement.

Cancelo has struggled for game time at Manchester City since conclusion of the 2022 World Cup, however, there aren’t many who believed he was close to the exit door.

But Cancelo is now off to Bavaria and the current champions of Germany have an option to buy the Portuguese full-back for £61 million at the end of the season.

It’s a situation that City didn’t want so close to the transfer deadline, although those in power at the Etihad Stadium felt they had no other choice.

Cancelo’s relationship with Pep Guardiola had soured to the point of no return. The two reportedly clashed in training before the Arsenal FA Cup fourth round match, with the player fuming over the fact he hadn’t been selected to start.

It’s a messy situation no one foresaw, one which has even started impacting City fans.

In the hours after the Cancelo to Bayern news emerged, the well-followed Twitter account known as @mcfc_lads announced the player had blocked them on Instagram.

Initially, they thought Cancelo’s account had been deactivated, but it turns out there was a more sinister reason for his absence on their feed.

A fellow Twitter user jokingly asked @mcfc_lads what they had done to Cancelo, to which the admin replied: “Nothing at all. He’s blocked a lot of the big City pages on Instagram.”

Yeah, it may be a clear sign that there’s no coming back to City for Cancelo, even if the switch to Bayern is only a loan one – for now.

The signing of the former Juventus defender is certainly a good piece of January business for Bayern, though.

City’s hierarchy will know deep down they’re losing a top-quality player, one who could transform Julian Nagelsmann’s side – who have been struggling for form in 2022/23 and are currently without Noussair Mazraoui due to injury.

Cancelo and Alphonso Davies as a full-back pairing? Yeah, not bad that.
