Chivas captain Jesús Molina is hoping the Copa por México will provide a springboard for success ahead of the 2020 Apertura.
The Flock are competing in the eight-team tournament that has been organised to give the sides involved some much-needed match practice after the long lay-off due to the Covid-19 shutdown.
Molina has been ruled out of Saturday’s open clash with rivals Atlas, but is backing his team-mates to do the business at Estadio Akron.
“Winning and playing well, which is what we have planned since the beginning of this mini tournament. It is the least we can hope for,” Molina told TUDN.
And looking further down the line, the 32-year-old expects Chivas to become a force in Liga MX again after a difficult couple of years for Los Rojiblancos.
“I promise that the team must always be fighting in the Liguilla area, be in the first four,” Molina said.
“Once there, we are going to go for that championship. We are hungry to be champions.”
Molina is no stranger to success, having lifted silverware at all his previous clubs.
The Mexico international started his career at Tigres, and has also lined out in the colours of América, Santos Laguna and Monterrey.
