Jesús Gil Manzano will referee the Champions League first-leg quarter-final between Manchester City and Bayern Munich at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday evening, UEFA have announced.

Pep Guardiola is preparing to do battle with Thomas Tuchel, who became Bayern Munich manager last month following the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann.

Tuchel’s Chelsea beat Manchester City in the 2021 UEFA Champions League Final in Portugal, although the German manager has endured a challenging start at the Allianz Arena, crashing out of the DFB-Pokal to SC Freiburg last Tuesday.

City are in scintillating form ahead of the Bayern Munich clash, winning their last eight matches in all competitions and enjoying a five-match winning streak in the Premier League.

Erling Haaland, who scored five goals against RB Leipzig in the Blues’ last Champions League outing, marked his return from injury with two goals against Southampton on Saturday evening.

The 22 year-old has now scored 44 goals for City this season and looks set to feature against a familiar opponent in midweek, due to his time playing for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

Bayern Munich overcame Paris Saint-Germain to reach the quarter-finals and the winner of this tie will play either Chelsea or Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

Ahead of Tuesday’s quarter-final first-leg at the Etihad Stadium, UEFA have announced the match officials for the tie.

Match Referee

Jesús Gil Manzano will lead an all Spanish team of match officials at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The 39 year-old has taken charge of 28 matches so far this season, showing 144 yellow cards and eight red cards.

Manzano, who has never refereed a game involving Manchester City, showed 10 yellow cards during a recent clash between Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea.

Assistant Referees

The referee will be accompanied at the Etihad Stadium by Assistant Referees Diego Barbero and Ángel Nevado.

Video Assistant Referees

Overviewing proceedings will be Video Assistant Referee Juan Martínez Munuera and Assistant Video Assistant Referee Alejandro Hernández.

Fourth Official

José Luis Munuera has been named as the Fourth Official.

The official will be overseeing conduct within the two dugouts, and the behaviour of managers Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel.
