It only took 15 seconds for Mexico’s Jesús Gallardo to set a new World Cup record for the fastest yellow card in the 88-year history of the tournament.
Gallardo picked up the quickest yellow card in the history of the tournament after smashing into Ola Toivonen. Gallardo charged straight into the back of the Swede trying to win a long ball, however, he clattered into the Swedish striker, earning his name in the pocket of Argentine referee Néstor Pitana.
Gallardo beat the previous fastest time of 54 seconds set by Uruguay’s Jose Alberto Batista in 1986.
Batista picked him a red card after 54 seconds while playing against Scotland in the Mexico edition of the tournament.
Russia’s Sergey Gorlukovich also went into the referee’s book on 54 seconds when he was given a yellow against Sweden at USA 1994.
Gallardo was not booked again, making him eligible for Mexico’s clash against Brazil on 2 July, as Mexico will try to break their unreal streak of six (now seven) straight tournament appearances where they have exited in the round-of-16.
