Having arrived home from the World Cup in Qatar, Mexican midfielder Jesús Gallardo answered questions from the press on his side’s group stage exit from the tournament. The 28-year-old Monterrey man suggested Mexican football has gone a little stale after the national team’s worst World Cup display since 1982.

Gallardo said: “A lot of things have to change, there are things that need to be improved in Mexican football, that’s everyone, not just the managers, but also the players – a lot of things need to change… We must change the way of looking at the sport, the way of playing it and the games here in our league, sometimes we can get complacent.”

The majority of criticism for Mexico’s early exit has been apportioned to the team’s now-departed coach Gerardo Martino but Gallardo suggested that the players we just as much to blame for the poor showing.
