The hosts turned in an emphatic performance to book their place in the knockout stage, though there was some personal frustration for the Manchester City striker, who saw his late penalty saved.

Brazil were already five goals to the good when Jesus stepped up to take the spot-kick, which he’d won.

He went low and to the left but the Peruvian keeper, Pedro Gallese, guessed correctly and diverted it round the post to make amends for fouling the 22-year-old.

Deployed on the right of a front three, Jesus showed a number of neat touches and was twice denied from open play as he went in search of his first Copa America goal.

It mattered not, however, as Casemiro, Roberto Firmino, Everton, Dani Alves and Willian all scored to help Brazil banish the frustrations of a 0-0 draw with Venezuela in their previous game.

Neither Fernandinho or Ederson were involved for the Selecao, who will have to wait until the group stage concludes to discover their quarter-final fate, though they do know they will play the third-placed team from Group B or C.
