Jesse Marsch accepts Cody Gakpo is out of Leeds’ price range | OneFootball

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch admits they were very close to signing PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo in the summer, but they are now likely to be priced out of a future transfer for the Netherlands star.

The Dutch forward was linked with a move to a number of Premier League clubs during the summer, including Manchester United, but he was close to putting pen to paper to join rivals Leeds.

Thankfully, a potential move to Leeds never materialised and he remained at PSV, where he has gone from strength-to-strength.

Marsch has admitted that Gakpo is now out of Leeds’ price range after missing out on a deal in the summer. He told the Men in Blazers podcast: “It’s difficult for us at Leeds because I think Gakpo’s gotten out of our price range. I mean, we were so close to securing a transfer for him in the summer, it was so close, and now obviously it’s disappointing. Our sporting director was in Holland meeting with the family, they had agreed on terms, on everything, was talking with PSV. I mean, we were 99.9% [of the way there].”

Gakpo has also went on to have an impressive World Cup, with Netherlands reaching the quarter-finals after knocking USA out in the round of 16. The attacker has played a more central role under Louis van Gaal, scoring three goals in the competition thus far.

The 23-year-old can now look forward to joining a bigger club than Leeds.

There has been reports that United will revisit their pursuit to sign Gakpo in January, but with the Glazers planning to sell, I’m not yet convinced that we will make any major signings in January.

A goalscorer is needed and Gakpo would see Erik ten Hag opt for a more fluid attack than what we’ve seen all season. The Dutchman likes to cut in from the left flank and could interchange with Marcus Rashford, therefore, making United far less predictable going forward with the ball.

Plus, Gakpo would be another option to have if Ten Hag wants to speed up transitions, especially on the counter attack.
