Jesse Lingard to Spurs links are exaggerated, claims Tottenham correspondent | OneFootball

Tottenham Hotspur’s rumoured pursuit of Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard appears to have been exaggerated by the press.

Some might say the news was too good to be true, anyway — considering it has been a long time since Lingard has hit a good run of form.

Leading journalist Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Lingard had emerged as a shock target for Tottenham, opening up a potential reunion for the England midfielder and former United manager Jose Mourinho, but a deal was dependent on Dele Alli leaving the club.

However, the saga takes another turn and this time we are told that previous reports are a little exaggerated.

Trusted Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold claims that initial reports suggesting Mourinho could sign Lingard this summer are ‘wide off the mark’, via Football.London.

Hurray. Another saga to go hand-in-hand with Manchester United’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho.

The Lingard we seen last season is 100 miles off the attacking midfielder who ensured the illustrious FA Cup trophy with a half-volley strike against Crystal Palace in 2016.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became manager the midfield has seen vast improvements and there are much better players than Lingard available for selection.

This summer’s only signing to date, Donny van de Beek, can bring the level of movement to the team that Lingard is renowned for (when Ole speaks), but so much more along with that.

Bruno Fernandes is world class, Paul Pogba is one of our best (not most consistent) players, and you’re never going to ask Lingard to sit and protect the back four.

I would also go as far to say Juan Mata should be in the pecking order ahead of him, while saying Andreas Pereira would be a step too far.
