After the disappointment against Young Boys earlier this week, West Ham against Manchester United was very much a 90-minute redemption story.

Jesse Lingard was the culprit in Switzerland five days ago but the 28-year-old midfielder redeemed himself with an 89th-minute winner against the Hammers.

David de Gea, who failed to save 11 penalties in last season’s Europa League final, also enjoyed his very own redemption story as he denied Mark Noble from the penalty spot with just seconds left to play.

David de Gea – 9 Not overly busy throughout the game but what a moment for the Spaniard. After being heavily criticized over the summer, De Gea has started the season in brilliant form and that penalty save will do him the world of good. The reaction from his teammates after the final whistle says it all.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6.5 Left a bit to be desired in the final third but was vital at the other end with his recovery runs.

Raphael Varane – 7 Steady, classy performance yet again.

Harry Maguire – 6 An uncharacteristic performance from the captain. Sloppy with the ball but stepped in when it was needed.

Luke Shaw – 5 Came close to scoring in the first half but was almost left red-faced in the dying moments. Lacked urgency at times.

Fred – 6 Struggled with the ball at his feet but did well in his duels.

Scott McTominay – 7 His importance to the side was highlighted as he returned following a four-week spell on the sidelines. Solid performance.

Bruno Fernandes – 7 Integral to everything United do – another fine outing. He won’t be credited with the assist for Ronaldo’s equaliser but it typified his influence.

Paul Pogba – 7 Jeered by the home support for getting fouled repeatedly but the Frenchman shrugged off any distractions to help his side.

Mason Greenwood – 7 An impressive first half, which included neat link-up with Cristiano Ronaldo. Fatigued as the game went on and was substituted.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 8.5 Any talk of the Portuguese superstar being anywhere near over the hill has quickly been rubbished in the last week. Ronaldo scored his fourth goal in just three games and was denied two stonewall penalties. Another fine performance.

Substitutes Jesse Lingard – 9 A late introduction but what a way to make up for your error earlier this week. Lingard was welcomed back to the London Stadium by the home support but he would soon come to break their hearts.
