Chelsea defender Jess Carter has signed a new three-year contract that promises to keep her at the club until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Carter joined Chelsea from Birmingham in 2018 when she was still just 20 years of age. She was initially a fringe player in the squad, starting only 11 WSL games in her first three seasons with the Blues, before an outstanding breakout 2021/22 campaign.

Previously seen as a full-back and given an utterly torrid time in the 2021 Champions League final against Barcelona, Carter impressively bounced back to become a key part of Emma Hayes’ back three last season alongside Millie Bright and Magdalena Eriksson.

She made 19 WSL starts and played more minutes in the league than anyone except Bright.

Carter has also shown her versatility by continuing to operate at right-back when called upon, although is still waiting for her first minutes of the season following increased competition brought to the Chelsea squad by summer signings Kadeisha Buchanan and Eve Perisset.

“I’m very excited and proud to extend my contract at Chelsea for three more years,” Carter said.

“I'm looking forward to continuing my development with the team, helping them to become even more successful.’

Chelsea general manager Paul Green added: ‘We are really delighted for Jess to sign a new contract with the club. She had an outstanding 2021/22 season for both club and country and we want to reward her for those achievements.

“We’re really happy with the way she’s been developing over the last couple of seasons and look forward to seeing that continue in the upcoming years.”
