Former Arsenal and LiverpoolJermaine Pennant, has been declared bankrupt after racking up debts of more than £1 million.
According to The Sun, the 39-year-old owes money to numerous creditors, including HMRC, banks, councils and utility companies.
He’s been given a one-year bankruptcy order at Birmingham county court.
A source told The Sun: “He owes stacks of cash all over the place. His debts are into seven-figures. His debts to the taxman and banks are huge.
“He has defaulted on mortgage payments and will likely have property repossessed.”
In 2020, his media company, Jermaine Pennant Ltd, was dissolved and struck off the company register.
Last year, his old mansion was torched after it was turned into a cannabis farm after he had left. Pennant also appeared in Celebrity Big Brother in 2018.
Pennant bought the property for more than £3 million but was used as a cannabis farm after he had moved out. Police believe it was then deliberately torched.
Detective Constable Rich Gray of Widnes CID said: “We are aware that this address has attracted a lot of attention recently following the discovery of a cannabis farm in the property in September.”
The mansion had been empty since 2020 when Pennant split from partner Alice Goodwin.
Pennant has previously admitted that alcohol has led to him making numerous mistakes in his life.
Speaking to GB News, he said: “When you’re young you can have a few here or there and get away with it, but if you want to be at the top of your game, you have got to be professional. You have got to stick with the elites.
“And like I said, me not having that guidance from when I was young, I was easily led astray.
“I have never had an addictive personality, but the drinks certainly did leave me with some mistakes.”
Pennant was once the world’s most expensive teenager when Arsenal paid Notts County £2m for his services back in 1999. The winger was just 15 years old at the time.
He only managed 26 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions, failing to live up to his potential.
But Pennant still had a successful Premier League career. The highlight was a £6.7 million move from Birmingham to Liverpool in 2006. He left Anfield was just three goals in 81 matches but did start in the 2007 Champions League final against AC Milan.
Permanent spells at Real Zaragoza and Stoke followed before moves to India and Singapore towards the end of his career.
He hung up his boots after a stint at Billericay Town in the Isthmian League Premier Division.
Given Pennant’s current financial troubles, the time when he abandoned his Porsche Cayenne in Spain ahead of his move from Zaragoza to Stoke must seem a long time ago.
Pennant left his supercar at the train station before returning to England, leaving it unlocked while racking up months of parking fines.
“I had to take a train to Madrid to fly to Manchester to sign the agreement with Stoke City, I was going to miss the train, so I just left my Porsche Cayenne there [in Zaragoza] and left the keys in the glove compartment,” Pennant explained in an interview with El Periodico de Aragon.
“I knew I wasn’t going to go back, I didn’t feel too bad to leave such an expensive car; I told my translator Fernando to go to the station and get the car.
“The poor man had to pay almost 500 euros as a fine, he was amazed and thought I was crazy for leaving an open Porsche abandoned.”
