If you’re too young to remember Jens Lehmann’s five-year stint as Arsenal goalkeeper, you missed out on a great banter era.
Whether he was tussling with Didier Drogba …
… or getting sent off in the Champions League final …
… there was never a dull moment during the crazy German’s time with the Gunners and on Saturday, he added another one to the list.
The 48-year-old turned out for an Arsenal Legends XI in an exhibition match against Real Madrid Legends at the Emirates and with the score level at 0-0 after 90 minutes, the game was decided by a penalty shoot-out.
Lehmann made an early save to give his side the advantage in the shoot-out, and it eventually fell to former Gunners midfielder Tomáš Rosický to take the decisive spot-kick.
But Lehmann was having none of it, and he sent Rosický back to the centre spot before stepping up to take the penalty himself. This is what happened next …
Not bad eh?
“I didn’t know it was his [Rosický’s] turn,” said Lehmann afterwards.
“I thought it was my turn. It was a decent strike.”
Luckily, Rosický was able to forgive his old team-mate.
“Jens Lehmann stole it from me!” joked the former Czech international.
“I was alright with it, I’ve known Jens for a very long time, since Dortmund, so I was expecting something like that. He was very lucky [he scored].
“This is why I know what I’m saying when I speak about him! I was expecting it from Jens. I don’t take it personally.”
The Arsenal Legends were managed by former centre-back David O’Leary, who was also eventually able to see the funny side of Lehmann’s antics.
“Jens at the very end: I was ready to kill him,” O’Leary said.
“I wanted Tomáš to get the ball, to score. I can’t tell you what he told Tomáš when he picked the ball up but he was quite adamant that he was going to take the last penalty.
“I was ready and waiting for him if he didn’t score but what a penalty. All he said to me inside was ‘well, what is the big deal’. We know what Jens is like. He’s got a presence about him.”
