The Championship campaign will get back underway on Friday, August 8, with the Tractor Boys taking on Birmingham City in what is sure to be a blockbuster clash.

Kieran McKenna and Co. are looking to add some extra strength to their side ahead of the new season but may have been dealt a fresh transfer blow by Burnley.

It was recently reported that Burnley had joined the race for Cajuste after Ipswich and Turkish club Beşiktaş had spent the early stages of the summer battling it out for the 25-year-old.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Cajuste is keen on playing Premier League football, which gives the Clarets a clear advantage in the race for his signature.

This would be a huge blow for the Tractor Boys, who have made their intention to re-sign the midfielder clear this summer.

Cajuste spent last season on loan at Portman Road, and would’ve joined the club permanently if they had retained their Premier League status due to an obligation in his deal.

The Swede was a standout performer for McKenna last term, making 30 Premier League appearances and impressing throughout.

Proving himself to be a capable operator at the top-flight level has led Cajuste to pursue a move back to the division, which isn’t something Ipswich Town can offer him right now.

Prior to his time in England, the 25-year-old spent a season featuring extensively for Napoli after two campaigns with French outfit Reims.

Cajuste has made 25 appearances for the Swedish national team, further highlighting his ability.

At one point this summer, it looked like Ipswich Town were in pole position to secure Cajuste’s services in what would have been an extremely exciting move.

His quality was obvious in the top-flight, which means that one could only imagine the devastating impact he would enjoy in the Championship.

However, it now looks too good to be true for the Portman Road faithful.

If Burnley’s interest is concrete, and they do move for the 25-year-old, there may be nothing that McKenna and Co. can do to convince him against joining the Clarets.

With it now revealed that Premier League football is a priority for Cajuste, there is a huge demand that the Tractor Boys simply can’t offer the midfielder, which may now finally force them into giving up on the transfer and pursuing other targets.
