Jenni Hermoso: We are living through the worst moments in Spanish women's football history | OneFootball

Jenni Hermoso has labelled the current situation within the Spanish national team as the 'worst moments in the history of women's football in Spain'.

On Thursday evening, the RFEF released a statement explaining that 15 players had resigned from the national team because of the detrimental impact it was having on their wellbeing. The statement defiantly vowed to not bow to the pressure of the resigning players, stating they could face bans of up to five years.

The following day, members of the Spain squad responded, condemning the RFEF for making their private communication public, criticising the 'infantilising tone' of the statement and clarifying that they had not resigned, rather made themselves unavailable until 'situations that affect our emotional and personal state are reversed'.

Hermoso - Spain's all-time top scorer, who is currently plying her trade at Pachuca following a summer switch from Barcelona - voiced her opinion on the situation for the first time on Tuesday evening by releasing a comprehensive statement on social media.

She admitted that in recent years she had felt 'immense loneliness within the national team'.

"Throughout these years I have witnessed significant growth and consistent evolution in the national team... which makes this whole situation that much more depressing," Hermoso wrote.

"The reality is that I haven't slept for days, thinking of solutions, and looking for explanations to the great emptiness that I feel inside. After all that we have worked for, it breaks my heart to realise that we are living through the worst moments in the history of women's football in Spain.

"I want to publicly express my unconditional support to all my compañeras who a few days ago decided to communicate the need to improve the working conditions that are experienced within the Spanish national team. Not only do I understand their reasons, but I have also experienced many of the same feelings and concerns.

"I am very aware of this because I have had the opportunity to live unique and immensely happy experiences playing for Spain but I have to admit that in recent years I have also had very tough moments of suffering before, during and after national team camps; an endless number of situations that left me unable to recognise myself and in turn made me feel immense loneliness within the national team."

Hermoso concluded her statement by writing she hoped solutions could be found 'so that we can put our sport where it deserves to be.'

"I sincerely hope that we will soon see a united, committed, and enthusiastic national team again," she added.
