Jay Gorter made his debut for Ajax in their 9-0 rout of Excelsior Maassluis in Thursday’s KNVB Cup round-of-16 clash.
Ajax easily took care of the Tweede Divisie side as Danilo bagged four goals on the night to lead Ajax to the quarter-finals.
The 21-year-old was brought in from Go Ahead Eagles for €1m over the summer and is hoping for more playing time in Amsterdam in the near future.
“I was hoping to keep zero. We were successful and we earned a great victory,” Gorter told ESPN with a smile.
“It (not being a starter) took some getting used to after my transfer. Keeping track of things is always difficult.
“Last season I was an important player, but for a young boy, it’s good that you don’t always have it easy.
“Ajax didn’t bring me in for nothing but I have had to start from scratch and show myself again. In the end, it went well for me. I’ve worked hard and developed well and this debut is a reward.
“Ajax have a plan with me and they know what I can do. I also want to show myself here. I played in the Eerste Divisie last season and now I play for one of the top clubs in the world.”
“I’m looking at it calmly, I don’t need to rush. I’m still young for a goalkeeper. I heard on Monday that I could play and I was very happy about that.
“Maybe another game is coming. I would really like to play more matches for the Ajax first-team but let me enjoy my debut first.”
Ajax, of course, are preparing for Sunday’s all-important clash against PSV, who are currently just one point ahead of the Amsterdam giants.
