La Liga president Javier Tebas has said that Barcelona will still need to make extra efforts if they want to sign new players next season.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Movistar+, the president of the Spanish league evaluated Barcelona’s economy while also shedding light on the infamous Negreira case that rocked the Catalan club recently.

As far as Barça’s economy is concerned, the team had to make several definitive decisions this summer in order to incorporate new signings such as Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo.

For that, they had to sell Ez Abde and loan out Ansu Fati to Brighton in the Premier League on a season-long loan.

More efforts needed

Tebas has said that although Barcelona’s summer transfer business was good, they still need to make extra efforts to get in new players next summer.

“It has improved a lot. They have made an effort in their salary bill. I think they still have to make an effort for next season, but they have managed to incorporate good players,” the president was quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

He added, “If they sell a player, they will be able to bring new ones. It is not yet in the 1/1 rule.”

While it hasn’t been talked about much, the fact remains that Tebas’ relationship with Barcelona president Joan Laporta is a bit shaky. When asked about it, the former said:

“We have spoken and some lack of understanding that existed has been ironed out.”

On the other hand, when asked who he thinks will win the league this season, he explained, “It’s complicated. I can’t say. I’m sure I would be wrong. I’m a Madrid fan, but I lost my fandom a long time ago. I would like the winner to have close to 90 points. It would be a competitive league.”

The Negreira scandal

In July this year, Barcelona were charged with corruption over payments made to Enriquez Negreira, then vice-president of Spanish football’s refereeing committee, between 2001 and 2018.

The team from Catalonia was accused of paying the referee to get the decisions their way. While talking about the spectacle, he said,

“The issue was prescribed. Just the fact of trying to influence is a crime of sports corruption. The corresponding disciplinary file should have been opened. And the sanctions range from a warning to a demotion. Many more explanations have to be given than what is expected. have occurred.”

Lastly, upon asking whether the case would have relegated the team, he added:

“That is for the judge to decide. The only capacity I have is to report some facts, and I would have reported them. The level of sanctions does not correspond to me,” he concluded.
