With DeAndre Yedlin facing up to another month out after reaggravating a groin injury he had surgery for in May, Javier Manquillo has taken full advantage of being Newcastle’s first-choice right-back.
Despite the slim loss to Arsenal, the 25-year-old put on a very impressive performance, much to the surprise of many Magpies supporters.
However, with Emil Krafth, a summer signing from Amiens, now in the fold and Yedlin returning soon, Manquillo realises he must maintain his good form in order to retain his place.
“Whenever you have someone who makes you compete for the shirt, it’s much better for the team because that means that you always need to be alert.
“Competition is always going to improve the squad so that can only be a good thing.
“What every footballer always wants is to be playing regularly and so I always work as hard as I can to be ready and available for the team and to always be able to help them out.”
Newcastle will look to earn their first points of the season on Saturday when they play away to newly-promoted Norwich City.
