Jarne Steuckers spent the 2022/2023 season on loan in the Dutch second tier with MVV Maastricht. After nine goals and 11 assists in the Netherlands, he has returned to parent club Sint-Truiden and is showing the same form in the top flight of Belgium. According to the stats collated by the Pro League, Steuckers is the current leader when it comes to chance creation with 12. Remarkably, the 21-year-old is still waiting for his first assist, but he has scored one goal already.

Sint-Truiden have been the surprise package of the opening four games, with the expansive attacking style allowing the likes of Steuckers to express their creative side. It is only a matter of time before his assist numbers begin to reflect his creative output. The Canaries are still a striker short, and these numbers certainly show that. However, adding a striker into the team would benefit the likes of the young attacking midfielder.

Prior to this season, Steuckers had made just six appearances for Sint-Truiden, and these came back in the 2020/2021 season. Now, he is one of the first names on the team sheet for new head coach Thorsten Fink, who clearly likes what he is seeing from midfield man. This weekend the Canaries face OH Leuven, a side that are looking for creativity themselves. So far the men in yellow have only lost once, at home to Anderlecht. They have drawn with Gent and beaten both Standard Liege and Kortrijk. Their style has completely changed since the arrival of Fink, with Finkball impressing many Belgian Pro League fans and pundits alike.

So far, Steuckers is one of the surprises of the season, but if he keeps creating he will begin to catch the eye of Pro League clubs and others abroad.
