Januzaj sends message to Manchester United after defeat with Real Sociedad

Adnan Januzaj will be rooting for Manchester United in the Europa League after they knocked his Real Sociedad out on Thursday night. He’s a Red after coming through the Academy, and I still consider it a great shame that he couldn’t blossom into a first team regular before an exit became the best option for both club and player.

On Thursday night, United played out an uneventful goalless stalemate at Old Trafford, having already booked their place in the next round thanks to a 4-0 victory in the first leg, which happened to be played in Turin.

Mikel Oyarzabal missed an early penalty for the visitors, and Axel Tuanzebe hit the back of the net before the goal was overruled because of a foul made by Victor Lindelof. We couldn’t complain with the decision and United got the job done last week.

The game saw Januzaj return to the club he broke through at in the 2013/14 season under David Moyes, but he was unable to turn the tie in their favour after such a hammering in the first leg.

Speaking to MUTV Januzaj said it was a bittersweet feeling for him on his return to Old Trafford: “Not the result we wanted but at the end of the day, for me, it’s been special to play against the club where it all started for me,” said the Belgian. “It’s been amazing but we lost, so I’m disappointed about that.”

Reflecting on the game itself, Januzaj felt La Real missed chances to turn around the tie. The penalty was a big one and they blew the chance to get an early goal on the scoreboard. He went on to send his best wishes to United that they go all the way in the competition this season.

Januzaj added: “We had the penalty and an occasion straight after it where we could have scored. But we lost and we have to say that United deserved to win the tie because in the first game we weren’t good enough. I hope they win this tournament.

“I know most of the people here and hopefully I can be back here one day, if it’s not here it will be in the stand to come and watch the team. I like to watch football but most of all I like to watch United.”
