Jannik Vestergaard issued an update on his future at Leicester City, after his international boss had warned his Denmark players over a lack of playing time.

The defender has only played one minute of Premier League football since January 19th, and last week Kasper Hjulmand declared that only those with regular playing time for their club sides would be taken to the World Cup.

“Matches are extremely important,” admitted the 29-year-old to reporters. “After all, it’s more competitive to play matches where it really matters than it is in training, but I have not become a worse football player in the last six months.

“Rather, I actually feel in a better place than I did during the autumn after a very, very short pre-season, if any at all. And then I ran into a couple of injuries and some illness.

“So personally I feel better now. I feel in better physical condition and also feel very comfortable on the field. I think that it has gone well in the matches where I have played.”

Vestergaard played an hour in Denmark’s remarkable away win over France in the Nations League last week.

“Of course, playing time is crucial over a long period of time, also to be the best version of myself.

“I’m working hard on that. I will be highly motivated when I return to Leicester to improve that and I think it will benefit me with a little break at the back of this and a full pre-season.”

It certainly sounds like the defender is focused on a return to his club side to fight for a starting place, rather than to opt for a move away this summer.
