Jannik Vestergaard has shied away from discussing Southampton’s chances of clinching a European spot for next season.
The Saints’ 2-0 home win over Newcastle on Friday sent them top of the Premier League, albeit with Liverpool, Leicester and Tottenham yet to play this weekend.
It marked the first time the club have led the top flight in 32 years, and the first time they have reached the summit since the Premier League began in 1992.
Despite the feelgood factor surrounding Ralph Hassenhüttl’s men, Vestergaard is wary of getting carried away so early in the campaign.
“It is very early to start talking about that [Europe]. We have been in good form recently – for almost a year, I would say,” the Denmark international said, per the Daily Mail.
“We are playing well because we are doing hard work and training hard but are taking each match at a time.
“We know we still have room for development and that is where our focus is. We are getting to know and trust in what we do.
“We do some stuff a bit differently and it’s just about the consistency of the squad and the team staying together for a longer period of time, working with the manager and getting his ideas across.
“That has made us strong recently, not only in the performances but also the results,” the centre-back added.
Southampton will travel to face Wolves on 20 November after the international break.
