The Philadelphia Union have hired their next manager in club history, Bradley Carnell. The 47 year old South African native joins his third MLS organization and gets his second managerial job of his career. Carnell last managed St. Louis City FC as their first manager ever heading into the 2023 season. Carnell led St. Louis to a 1st place finish in the Western Conference during the 2023 MLS season. But after a rough half season in 2024, Carnell was let go from the organization.

In 62 games as Manager of St. Louis City, Carnell finished with a record of 22 wins, 15 draws, and 25 losses. He also has an additional 14 games as Interim Manager of the New York Red Bulls back in 2020 where he finished with a record of 6 wins, 3 draws, and 5 losses.

The hire for Philadelphia makes a ton of sense, even if this is a step backwards in terms of managerial quality from Jim Curtin. The Philadelphia Union front office was never going to make a huge splash in terms of name for this hire. They wanted someone who was going to come in, do more with less, focus on youth development, and play someone of a pressing style. That is Bradley Carnell. Carnell did very well within the New York Red Bulls organization early on his career as an Assistant Manager working with young talents. With St. Louis, he clearly punched about his weight and did a lot more with a club that spent a bit less. Carnell feels like a Manager that could be around the Union organization for the next decade or so.
