Jamie Carragher is undoubtedly one of the best football pundits in the business.
Since retiring from playing duty with Liverpool at the end of the 2012/13 season, the 44-year-old has continued to be a regular presence on television screens around the world.
Carragher is brilliant on CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage, although perhaps his best work comes on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme.
Alongside Manchester United legend Gary Neville most weeks, Carragher analyses the previous weekend’s matches tremendously and provides viewers with a lot of useful information.
As well as dissecting games to the very highest standard, the former England defender also comes with a humorous edge to him and there are countless funny clips of him in the MNF studio down the years.
Selecting the best of the bunch is a mighty tough task. However, it’s also hard to think of one that tops Carragher’s run in with Wayne Rooney.
After Everton beat Swansea City on MNF – a match in which Rooney scored from the penalty spot – Carragher interviewed England’s record goalscorer from the studio alongside Chelsea legend John Terry and presenter Dave Jones.
And he just couldn’t resist going full savage after Rooney tried to poke fun at him over the t-shirt he had been wearing before the show started.
Rooney said: “I’ve seen when you were in your casual gear. I have to say JT was looking OK but Carra your top was horrendous!”
To which Carragher replied: “A bit like your hairline!”
Yeah Carragher didn’t hold back one bit, but to be fair to Rooney, he took the response like an absolute champion.
One fan in the comment section on the YouTube video summed it all up perfectly: “This is the equivalent of someone pulling you back by the shirt on the pitch and a minute later you retaliate by two footing him in the knee.”
The current DC United manager them got some form of revenge when he revisited the MNF studio in February of 2018 for Chelsea’s match against Watford…
Right at the very start of the Sky Sports programme, Rooney said: “It’s great to be here.
“To be honest this is probably the closest Carra ever got to me so I’m sure he’ll enjoy it as well.”
Well played, Wazza.
