Reds crash out of the FA Cup as hopes of winning a quadruple are over
Jamie Carragher says Liverpool's chances of winning the Premier League title have increased following their shock FA Cup exit.
Ryan Hardie's 53rd minute penalty proved to be the difference at Home Park as the side bottom of the Championship secured a famous victory over the Premier League leaders.
The result means the Reds' hopes of winning an unprecedented quadruple this season are over.
However, they remain on course for a successful campaign having already reached the Carabao Cup final in addition to being six points clear at the top of the Premier League table and into the Champions League last 16.
Defeat in the FA Cup will result in fewer games for Arne Slot's side and this scenario prompted one Liverpool supporter to predict at least one trophy win this season as they wrote on X, formerly Twitter: 'Probability to win the league has gone up'.
In agreement with the fan, Carragher replied with a one-word response: '100'," he wrote.
It was a much changed Liverpool side that played against Plymouth as the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister all rested completely, presumably with one eye on Wednesday's Merseyside derby at Everton.
Speaking after the game, Slot insisted that he did not regret handing opportunities to a number of fringe players as well as youngsters.
"No, because you never know what will happen if we would have played with our starters over here," he said. "I think we've seen during this season, we've seen a few times already, that it's a game plan, a playing style, which is difficult for our starters, but also for the ones that played today.
"So, constantly long balls, second balls, long balls, second balls. It's difficult for every team. We had it with [Manchester] United at home for example as well. They had a similar playing style going to a very low block [then] kick every ball long, and then we played with our starters.
"I think today also showed why we played with the ones we played with today because these players need game rhythm as well. For them to be ready in the upcoming months, they need game time, and you saw today that some of these players really need games like this to be ready for the last three months of the season."
