Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have given their opinions on Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle United yesterday and what it means for their top-four chances.

Mikel Arteta’s men made the journey to Tyneside knowing that only a win would lift them back above North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur into the last Champions League place.

However, a Ben White own goal and Bruno Guimaraes’ late strike secured a first victory for Newcastle over Arsenal since 2018.

That defeat leaves the Gunners trailing Spurs by two points heading into the final week of the campaign and Jamie Carragher now expects Arsenal to miss out on Europe’s premier club competition for the sixth consecutive year.

“Yes (Champions League chances over) it is,” Carragher said on Monday Night Football.

“I think that is a massive problem, not just this season, there is a huge problem for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal going forward.

“Europa League next season, Thursday-Sunday I think they’ve had their opportunity, no European football this season – that was a huge advantage.

“They’re not a top-four club in this country but they had an advantage on the other teams and they still haven’t made it pay and I fear for Mikel Arteta – that’s a bad one tonight.”

Meanwhile, ex-Manchester United defender Gary Neville likened Arsenal’s damaging defeat last night to his old’s club Europa League final loss against Villarreal and believes that the repercussions could spill over into next season.

“It’s a bad one. I remember United losing that Europa League final and thinking it was more than just losing the final,” Neville stated.

“Those Arsenal players’ body language at the end tells you it’s more than just a defeat – it’s a big one.

“Tottenham getting into the Champions League, they need it, Conte needs it, the financial and economic power it’ll give over Arsenal next season, I do feel it’s a bad one.”

With their Champions League destiny no longer in their own hands, Arsenal welcome Everton to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday in the final matchday of the 2021-22 Premier League season.
