James Pearce reveals the players he expects to see against Norwich City

The Carabao Cup always presents an opportunity for Liverpool to rest some players, and give others a chance to take centre-stage. And the Norwich City game will be no different – at least, that’s what James Pearce of The Athletic is expecting. Pearce stated, after Liverpool’s 3-0 win against Crystal Palace: “I’d expect Kelleher, Gomez, Phillips, Oxlade, Jones, Minamino and Origi all to start. Kaide Gordon should also be involved.”

It would come as no surprise to see all of the aforementioned players involved in the game; all of them deserve a chance, especially young Kaide Gordon. The game will present Jurgen Klopp with a chance to test the depths of his squad. It also gives certain players the chance to make their case to the manager about increased game time.

The like of Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, in particular, have the chance to make a case to the manager.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

It will be interesting to see how certain players do against Norwich. The pressure will be on them to take their chance and, if they win the game, they’ll get more opportunities in the next round of the competition.

The game feels most important for Takumi Minamino, who starred in pre-season before picking up an untimely injury on international duty. If he can get a good performance and maybe a goal under his belt, then we could see the Japanese international handed more opportunities at Liverpool.
