Spain vs Germany is never going to be a small affair, but it ramps up several notches of intensity when World Cup survival is on the line.

That definitely felt like the case in a cagey first-half with both side aiming to stay solid and compact and avoid conceding goals.

With the stalemate yet to be broken going into the second stanza, Luis Enrique’s decision to toss Alvaro Morata into the fray quickly bore fruit with the striker running in behind and causing more headaches for the German backline.

It was Morata that would eventually break the deadlock leaving the Germans staring down the proverbial barrel of an early flight home.

Fortunately, Germany were able to restore parity as Niklas Fullkrug thundered home from close range.

Jamal Musiala’s brilliant performance vs Spain

That resurgence is, in no small part, due to the efforts of Musiala, who worked tirelessly all night long to keep German hopes alive.

One moment in particular showed Musiala’s industry perfectly as he fought tooth and nail against a brace of Spanish defenders to keep the ball before leaving them all in his wake with some very silky touches.

Brilliant – the boy is just 19.

The above moment is just one of many that highlighted just how good Musiala was on a night when Germany were desperate need of a spark of inspiration.

Thankfully, for their sake, Musiala showed experience beyond his years to ensure the dream remains alive.

Jamal Musiala’s switch from England to Germany

Musiala, who grew up in England playing for Chelsea and even represented the England U21 side, switched allegiances to his country of birth in early 2021 and hasn’t looked back since.

He made his full international debut for Germany in March of that year and has since gone on to score once in 19 appearances for the 2014 world champions.

In fact, so good has Musiala been that he was even likened to Lionel Messi by Lothar Mathaus after setting up two goals agains Schalke in November.

“That’s like Messi. That’s Hollywood. He must never leave Bayern,” he said. “He always has to play. His value is a quarter of a billion.”
