Croatia moved to the top of their group with a 4-1 win over Canada, while Germany picked up their first point of the campaign against Spain, which kept their hopes alive after Kamada’s Japan slipped to a defeat

2018 runners-up Croatia eased to a 4-1 win over Canada, sending their opponents out of the tournament before the final round of group games. The Croats went behind early but had already turned the match around by half-time and scored another two goals after the break. Croatia are now top of Group F, closely followed by Morocco, who beat Belgium 2-0. Kristijan Jakic was an unused substitute against Canada.

Daichi Kamada meanwhile played the full 90 minutes for Japan but was powerless to prevent the Samurai Blue from going down 1-0 to Costa Rica. Los Ticos took the lead late in the match and Japan couldn’t find an answer.

Also in the second round of Group E matches, Germany salvaged a draw against Spain. Alvaro Morata’s opener was cancelled out by Niclas Füllkrug towards the end of the game, with the final score being 1-1. After coming on as a substitute in the opening match against Japan, Mario Götze remained on the bench this time, where he had fellow Eagle Kevin Trapp for company.

The draw gave Germany their first point of the World Cup but leaves them bottom of the group, with Japan and Costa Rica both on three points and Spain leading the way on four.
